Post NaNoWriMo – “Now What?” Has Arrived!

Any other Wrimos receive this email from Tim Kim?  Scared, happy, excited… Read on to find out why!

It’s January, and the “Now What?” Months are here… And here is my forecast for 2015: by the end of the year, I will have a final, polished version of my NaNo-novel. Do you also see a final draft a-brewing on your horizon? Here’s how we can tackle the next couple months:

helmet  Make a commitment. First things first, really. Sign the 2015 Revision Contract and publicly proclaim your noveling forecast with a shiny badge.  (You will need to log in to your NaNo account to do all this commitment stuff)

helmet  Learn from the experts. The good news is, we don’t have to break new ground. There are foundations to build upon. Authors Jason Hough and Susan Dennard both took their NaNoWriMo drafts, edited them, and went on to publish whole series of successful novels.

Make a $60 donation to join Susan and Jason as they talk revision and publishing in a webinar on January 15 at 4:00 PM PST. Your donation will also go towards supporting creative writing in libraries, classrooms, and living rooms around the world.

helmet  Bookmark the “Now What?” Months page. Because the stuff above is really just a sprinkle compared to the storm of resources we’ve got for you. Check back to find out about future webinars with editors, tweet-chats with literary agents, and communities full of accountability partners.

Ready for it to rain freshly released inner editors,

Tim Kim
Editorial Director

Reading during NaNoWriMo – Scott Westerfeld’s Afterworlds

As a libra7. Afterworldsrian, it’s very unlike me to suggest that folks take a reading hiatus, but I understand that during NaNoWriMo people have limited free time and something’s gotta give.  However, if you’re one of those who have suspended their reading in order to devote more free time to writing, I’m going to ask you to find some extra time somewhere to pick up Scott Westerfeld’s Afterworlds.

Afterworlds came to my attention right after this year’s epic Donation Double Up Day because in the fundraising reports that were published after, HQ announced that Westerfeld had pledged $10,000 to NaNoWriMo.  Swoon!  Just the thing to make this writer authorcrush!  It’s two stories blended into one, with alternating chapters.  Darcy is a high school graduate who recently sold her NaNoWriMo novel to a publisher and is delaying her freshman year of college to move to NYC to rewrite it; Lizzie is the protagonist in Darcy’s said novel.  That’s all I’ll say, because to really get into the plot here I think would provide too many spoilers, and part of the fun of the book is revealing the tension between author and her characters.

Ok – back to writing those 1667 words!
